10 Benefits of Grape Seed Oil

Within the world of food supplements we find interesting products or backed by science. One of them is grape seed oil. Grape seeds contain interesting amounts of antioxidants including various phenolic compounds such as anthocyanins, flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs).

Due to its high content of antioxidants, grape seed oil can help us prevent various diseases and increase protection against oxidative stress, tissue damage and inflammatory processes.

In this article we want to find out, from the scientific point of view, how grape seed extract can help us in our day to day. Therefore, we show you 10 interesting health benefits.

1. Grape seed oil and blood pressure

Several scientific studies have been conducted reviewing the relationship between grape seed oil and high blood pressure or hypertension. A review of 16 studies involving more than 800 people found that taking between 100 and 2,000 mg of grape seed extract every day significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The average reduction was 6.08 mmHg for systolic and 2.8 mmHg for diastolic.

In this review we found that the best results obtained were for the range of people under 50 years of age and with obesity.

Other studies state that grape seed extract should be taken between 100 and 800 mg daily for 4 months. [See study]

Overall, the results are very favorable and there is enough data to establish that grape seed oil is beneficial for lowering blood pressure.

2. Anticancer activity

The word cancer and cancer prevention is on the lips of many, but only medical studies of global relevance should be heeded.

What is known today is that a diet rich in antioxidants (flavonoids and proanthocyanidins) is associated with a reduction in the appearance of different types of cancer. [See study]

Grape seed oil has been shown to be an antioxidant potential with the ability to reduce scaly, pancreatic, hepatic, gastric, oral, hepatic and prostate cell lines in humans, albeit at the laboratory level. [See study]

Tested on animals, there is a better response to chemotherapy treatments with regular consumption of grape seed extract. [See study]

To assess the effects against cancer, more studies of international relevance are still needed to draw serious conclusions.

3. Grape seed reduces cellular aging

The habitual consumption of flavonoids with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties is linked to the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, the best known as Alzheimer’s.

There is a substance found in grape seed oil known as gallic acid which, according to animal studies, can inhibit the formation of fibrils by beta-amyloid peptides. [See study]

These groups of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain are typical of the progression of Alzheimer’s.

These studies have found with this supplement a reduction in memory loss, increased cognitive status and improvement in antioxidant levels at the brain level, which results in a reduction in the presence of brain lesions and amyloid groups. [See study]

4. Can act on oxidative stress

Stress and oxidative damage can be caused by various abnormalities. Among them, high cholesterol based on high levels of LDL in the blood, which can result in heart disease.

Evidence of supplements based on grape seed oil that manage to reduce LDL cholesterol levels and, therefore, markers of oxidative stress has been found, although these studies have only been carried out in animals and scientific evidence is lacking. [See study]

This evidence has been reproduced in other studies carried out in humans, with very similar and significant results. [See study]

Some studies have shown the reduction of up to 14% of LDL cholesterol in adult patients with the consumption of 400 mg of grape seed extract, although this trial has not been able to be reproduced with the same positive results in other studies.

5. Increases bone strength

There is a direct relationship between lCollagen levels and bone strength. This is linked to a diet based on the consumption of flavonoid antioxidants, such as those we can obtain from grape seed oil.

This supplement can help us increase bone density, thereby reducing the likelihood of bone fractures and fissures.

Animal studies have tried to evidence these claims, specifically in diets reduced in essential minerals such as calcium, obtaining positive responses. [See study]

A very common disease in elderly patients is rheumatoid arthritis, which causes severe inflammation, loss of bone density and deterioration of joints.

Studies, again conducted on animals, have shown that grape seed oil can reduce the damage caused by autoimmune inflammatory arthritis. [See study]

As you can see, human studies are still needed to increase the scientific evidence.

6. Grape seed extract promotes liver protection

At the level of the liver, it is the organ responsible for detoxifying the body of toxic and harmful substances. Therefore, it is exposed to a multitude of viral infections and oxidative damage.

Several studies have confirmed a positive effect of grape seed oil on liver protection. These trials have concluded a reduction in inflammatory processes and protection against damage caused by free radicals during exposure to different toxins. [See study]

The liver enzyme alanine aminotransferase is an indicator of liver toxicity. A trial has shown improvements in fatty livers after consumption of this supplement, at the same level as consuming 2 grams of vitamin C daily.

7. May improve kidney function

Oxidative stress can cause a loss in kidney function that often becomes irreversible. This problem is also linked to inflammatory damage and leads to chronic kidney failure.

These patients have undergone several studies where 2 grams of grape seed oil were consumed daily for half a year, compared to the placebo group. The results concluded a significant reduction of 3% in the presence of urinary protein and up to 9% of improvement in renal filtration.

8. Improved blood circulation

There are small studies that establish signs of improvement with the consumption of grape seed extract supplement and the improvement of circulation. This is due to its anticoagulant effects, as could be seen in a clinical trial conducted on 17 healthy postmenopausal women, for 8 weeks at a dose of 400 mg. [See study]

Improved circulation and reduced blood clotting is related to the presence of proanthocyanidins in grape seed oil. There are cases of reduction of up to 40% of inflammation in the legs at 2 weeks of daily consumption of 133 mg of this compound. [See study]

9. May inhibit the development of bacteria

Several studies have shown how grape seed oil can have antifungal and antibacterial activity. This has been proven against the development of bacteria such as Campylobacter or Escherichia coli, which can cause serious digestive problems.

Both studies were conducted in the laboratory, where inhibition of several strains of Staphylococcus aureus which, in many cases, can become resistant to a large battery of antibiotics.

As for the development of fungi, one of the most interesting to eliminate is Candida, related to yeasts and which causes the disease known as candidiasis.

Studies have been carried out in animals (mice), to see the evolution of the disease after applying grape seed oil every 2 days. The results concluded that the infection was reduced at 5 days of treatment, disappearing completely at 8 days.

In this case, it is necessary to reproduce these studies in humans to verify that it has the same positive effect against this type of infection.

10. Accelerates wound healing

Grape seed oil can also be applied to the skin, obtaining improvements in wound healing, burns and healing power.  Several studies have been carried out in animals and also in humans, with very satisfactory results.

In one of these studies, using a 2% grape seed extract cream versus placebo expertly, they demented greater postoperative wound healing compared to the placebo group.

It is believed that the improvement on the skin is influenced by the presence of proanthocyanidins.

Does grape seed oil have side effects?

There is currently no evidence of harm or side effects with the consumption of this substance at recommended doses (300 to 800 mg per day for 8 to 16 weeks).

However, there are no studies that have proven safety in pregnant women, so caution is advised when taking this supplement during this stage.

There is evidence that grape seed extract can reduce phosphorus absorption, so it is not recommended for use in people suffering from anaemia. See foods rich in iron.
